DC United was one of the most successful in the early years of MLS, under then-head coach Bruce Arena The team won eight of its thirteen titles between 1996 and 1998. The first shield of the team consisted of the team's name, D.C. United, over a black bald eagle looking right on a red field, clutching three soccer balls overlaid on three white stars. It was established in 1996. The three stars and balls were meant to reflect the three jurisdictions of the region.
