The UMBC Retrievers compete in college athletics at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association on behalf of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (NCAA). The Retrievers men's basketball team defeated the #1 rated Virginia Cavaliers in the NCAA men's basketball tournament on March 16, 2018. Out of 135 prior match-ups, this was the first time a 16-seed defeated a 1-seed in the tournament. They have also won two conference tournament championships, one from the Northeast Conference and two from the America East Conference. The nickname of the school's teams and their mascot inspired the athletic emblem of the University of Maryland. The dog on the current logo is brown with black highlights, while the initials UMBC are white.
