Northern Illinois University's athletic teams are known as the Northern Illinois Huskies (NIU). The logo shows a side view of a dog's head facing to the right. Over the black background, the image is accompanied by the lettering NIU in red and HUSKIES in white. "The Hard Way" has become a way of life for generations of Huskie football players, but even the most ardent fan or former player is unaware of the true origin of the phrase that has become the mantra for many Northern Illinois University teams. The current "Huskie Fight Song" can be traced back to the 1961-62 academic year and an editorial request from The Northern Star for a catchier tune for students, fans, and alums at athletic events. The school has triumphed the conference tournament champions MAC in 1982, conference regular-season champions MAC in 1981, and conference division season champions MAC in 2006 and 2020.
